For several years, we casually batted around the idea of moving back to the Florida countryside. Online, we began to investigate the world of camelids. When we checked into alpacas, our first reaction was sticker shock! But the more we learned about alpacas and their fiber, the more intrigued we became.

So our next step was to go see a working Florida alpaca farm. On a rainy day, we descended without warning on the unsuspecting owner of a suri farm. That’s when we discovered that alpaca people are some of the nicest people a person will ever meet, and we learned that they are eager to talk alpacas to anyone and everyone for hours and hours. We loved the animals. So did we immediately plunk down our money and buy a dozen? Not on your life.


Together, we spent more than two years visiting alpaca farms all over Florida and Georgia. Moreover, Sheila’s job took her all over the country, and wherever she went, she visited alpaca farms. We asked questions and questions and more questions, especially about alpacas in hot, humid Florida. We decided we were suri people, so we bought twenty acres of oak and pine forest in Homosassa, Florida. We repaired an old animal shelter, cleared our first pasture and bought a package of two females with an unproven junior herdsire. We have never regretted that decision. With thoughtful care, our suris thrive in the Florida sunshine.


Early on, we decided to develop a mid-sized herd focused on quality. We maintain the hands-on aspect of alpaca husbandry that drew us to this adventure from the beginning. In our breeding program, we were and continue to be more impressed by lustrous, dense fiber and flawless conformation than an animal’s country of origin. Our herd contains champion Accoyo, Peruvian, Bolivian and Chilean lineages. Our obsession with producing elite fleece guided our purchase of every dam, and one of them rewarded us with a wonderful grey cria: Sun Greybill Boomer, who has won six blue ribbons in all six show appearances. And no wonder, his micron counts are 19.5 (2006) and 18.2 (2007). To compliment Boomer, we purchased a beautiful Kobe boy, Sir Charles of PVA in 2006, whose latest micron count is 21.7. Currently, out of nineteen alpacas, we have four with micron counts of less than 20.

Although our professional careers, one a college English professor and the other a computer software consultant, are about as far apart as can be, both share one common skill: teaching. This skill forms the foundation of the Sun Spiced philosophy; we see ourselves as mentors for beginning alpaca breeders and consultants for experienced members of the alpaca community.
