Focus on Colorado
Delphi Alpacas is a relatively small "hands on" operation; we maintain a maximum herd size of 40 alpacas. The hands belong to Linda Bat and Rus Hinman - with the significant aid of a Great Pyrenees named Spark. Linda was a veterinary technician for 10 years before discovering alpacas. A 1983 graduate of Bel-rea Institute, she has worked with a number of veterinarians on a permanent as well as on a relief basis. She taught the Pima Medical Institute Veterinary Assistant program during it's first 3 years in Denver. Linda also worked as a veterinary laboratory technician for a busy veterinary laboratory in Colorado during that time, with an emphasis in hematology and microbiology. Delphi Alpacas began in 1993. It has evolved with the industry and it has been an exciting ride!
We attend the Futurity, and the Great Western Alpaca Show every year, plus The National if it is in the west. We generally add a few other smaller shows to the roster, totaling about 5 shows a year. We are committed to this industry - out of a true love for what we do. Our goal is to create a small herd of extremely rare quality (Read: THE BEST) fleece in black, grey and maroon. We have the pieces of the puzzle in Avatar, (who produces Extraordinary slick handling fine fleeces, that Stay fine); Zeppelin (who has the black genes with Extreme fineness and slick luster - plus extreme length); And Toledo - with Excellent fine density, uniformity and color. We have not stopped breeding our girls due to the economy, as some breeders have. I do very strongly believe that all females should not be bred just to make a baby - especially with just any herd sire. But our herd quality has reached a very high level. Every alpaca here deserves every chance to add to the National herd. Avatar produces qualities that are extraordinarily rare on this planet. We hope he has another 100 babies in him yet to come - and we won't miss an opportunity to meet a single one. The other members of our herd also have the potential to produce some of the best alpacas in this country. So rather then try to predict which ones will throw the next champions (they all have that potential!), reduce production, and maintain high prices; we have chosen instead to reduce our prices. This has allowed us to keep our numbers optimal for our hands on management. We're small and we like it that way! Alpaca prices are highly impacted by their selling situation, often much more so than their quality. But it's win win for us and for our customers. Since we are well established, we are in a position to sell extremely high quality production at market prices and still maintain an excellent business. Join us! What could be better? We love nothing better than to see happy customers showing their new alpacas off. Watch for Delphi alpacas at your local shows this year - we are excited to see how they do.
