Alpaca Blanket Project Update

The Alpaca Blanket Project is one of the first companies to purchase American alpaca fiber for the manufacture of alpaca products.
This is an update on plans for 2011:

ABP is on schedule.  Payout for 2010 was over $25,000 with checks to fiber producer members ranging from $10 to $4,000.   The per-pound payment for fiber in 2011 is significantly higher than 2010.  ABP will purchase usable fiber under 30 micron that is 2.5 - 5.0 inches in length.  Huacaya under 26 micron will bring $5 per pound to the fiber producer; other fiber at a slightly lower rate.
World market for "greasy" alpaca in grade 2 (20-23 micron) is under $4 per pound.  This means that ABP will be paying 25%+ more than World Market price for fiber in 2011.
There are still some blankets, scarves and baby blankets available from the 2010 runs but they will probably be gone within the next couple months.  ABP has six runs scheduled with Pendleton Woolen Mills for October 2011 which is double the three 2010 run amount.
