In 2009, Pedro's Pride Alpaca Ranch, LLC. began using microscopic examination of fiber to verify histogram numbers and as an easy, inexpensive way to compare fibers from different alpacas, from the same alpaca during different fleece years and as a tool for breeding. Thus, in our descriptions of alpacas, we are mentioning histograms where appropriate, but also giving estimated fiber diameters based on our in-house microscopic exams. In addition to the micron diameters estimate, the microscope allows us to see clearly the scale height surface of sampled hairs. These examinations consistently confirm the visual and tactile qualities of brilliance and hand for individual alpacas.
